For an unforgettable bucket-list adventure, you don’t have to travel far. One of Europe’s most extraordinary natural experiences is closer than you think.
On this page, we introduce you to the most remarkable experiences you can enjoy on the UNESCO Wadden Sea: dry falling, mudflat hiking and spending a night at anchor on the Wadden Sea. It is the ultimate weekend for groups who want to experience something truly special together, in a UNESCO World Heritage landscape in the north of the Netherlands.
What does the weekend look like?
On Friday evening at 8:00 pm, you board one of our traditional flat-bottomed sailing ships in the harbour of Harlingen, a historic port town in the north of the Netherlands. The first evening is spent relaxing in the harbour, where you can already enjoy the atmosphere and the view across the water.
On Saturday morning, we set course for the UNESCO Wadden Sea. We sail to a location where we dry out on a sandbank. We carefully sail onto a sandbank and, as the tide slowly recedes, the seabed gradually appears. This is when the magic begins: you step ashore and walk across the seabed. As you wander across the sandbanks, you hear the sounds of feeding birds and see lugworms spraying water from the sand. You may spot shrimp, small crabs and flatfish. Cockles, mussels and oysters can be found here in abundance — in some areas up to 100 cockles per square metre. It quickly becomes clear why the Wadden Sea has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Time slows down here, giving you space to truly unwind.
After the mudflat walk, the ship remains at anchor in the middle of the Wadden Sea. Here, far away from towns and artificial light, you experience the night in a way that is rare in the Netherlands: in true darkness. The Wadden region is one of the few places where it still becomes genuinely dark at night. The starry sky is breathtaking — the Milky Way, countless stars and even planets such as Jupiter, Mars and Saturn can be visible. A night on the Wadden Sea is an experience you will not easily forget. If tides and conditions allow, the ship remains anchored on the sandbank overnight and may dry out again in the morning, allowing you to wake up on a ship resting on the seabed.
On Sunday, we sail back to Harlingen at a relaxed pace. Around 5:00 pm, the weekend comes to an end and you step ashore with a head full of new memories and a deep sense of relaxation.

Frequently Asked Questions – Night on the Wadden Sea
Drying out means that at high tide the ship deliberately sails onto a sandbank. When the water recedes at low tide, the ship is left completely dry on the seabed. You can then step ashore and walk across the mudflats. As the water rises again, the ship naturally floats free. Drying out is a unique experience that is only possible in the tidal area of the Wadden Sea.
